 Preparing for Treatment

BREAST REDUCTION (REDUCTION MAMMOPLASTY) CONCERNS & EXPECTATIONS

  • Initial Assessment

    If you are considering breast reduction, Dr. Okada will consult with you in our offices to discuss your reasons for seeking treatment and to determine whether your procedure might be covered by your insurance. She will discuss surgical options and may take medical photographs.

  • During Treatment

    In most instances, a breast reduction is an outpatient procedure. The procedure removes excess tissue and fat to leave breasts that are lighter in weight and more in proportion with a patient’s body. Some skin is also removed and tailored to match the smaller size of the breast, resulting in smaller, lighter breasts that are lifted and proportionate.

  • Recovery Timeline

    Swelling, bruising, and soreness will typically follow a breast reduction surgery, and the reduced weight of the breasts will be immediately apparent. Full recovery will take several weeks, though you should be able to return to most activities within 2-3 weeks. You’ll likely need to wear a compression garment while you’re healing, to reduce movement and improve comfort.

Will a breast reduction hurt? 

Breast reduction is surgery, and there will likely be moderate pain along and beneath the incision lines. Pain should become easily manageable within a couple days, however, and then you will just need to move carefully until you are fully healed. For most breast reduction patients, the relief provided by the reduced weight of the breasts offsets the discomfort following surgery.

What are the possible risks of breast reduction surgery?

As with any surgery, complications and risks are possible. Some of these can include: 

  • Breast pain

  • Poor wound healing or infection

  • Unexpected scarring

  • Tissue damage or tissue death - this risk is increased if you smoke

  • Changes in skin sensation

How can I prepare for breast reduction surgery? 

There are several things you can do to help your surgical outcome be the best it can be. If you smoke, stop now. Smoking has several effects on blood flow and can delay the healing process after any surgery. Maintain a stable weight for at least 12 months before surgery, and arrange ahead of time to have help post-surgery to prevent the risk of opening your surgical incisions.
